About me and my tutoring related background:

Starting around the age of 5, a plethora of teachers taught me over the years. One of the things I’ve realized, is that all of the teachers I have had, had a different style of instructing, but most lacked the nurturing side of teaching. As an observant illustrator, I've cherry picked valuable skills along the way, cover a range of various mediums and techniques, all while allowing a nurturing space to flourish.

Now why do I want to teach with little to no teaching background?

My initial dream job as a kid was to be an artist, but as soon as I had substantial skills under my belt, helping my peers and teaching them tips they didn’t know of, it gave me a new sense of fulfillment and realization. To have the privilege of passing down knowledge and perspective, is incredible thing to experience.

When I was graduating with a BFA, I was just about to get into the Teacher Education Program, until I remembered the ongoing teachers' strike. Regardless of that hindrance, it did not stop me from teaching through other means. Live-streaming art lessons, or providing one-on-one mentoring.

My main priority is to allow a painless and inexpensive way to learn visual arts while providing the tips, tricks, and skills I have gained throughout my life.

Tutoring Details:

Demonstration format:

  • Discord or Zoom calls only, as they allow stable screen sharing from desktop

  • Digital medium will be the device I will use to teach. However, most of the lessons taught can be replicated through traditional means. No additional devices are required to learn (e.g., Photoshop, drawing tablet, etc.)

  • This excludes paint, ink, or any other tangible material that cannot be replicated digitally (i.e., learning to mix oil paints and applying it to a primed canvas)

Tutoring Levels:

Professional tutoring breakdown:

  1. ) Identify the baseline of the current skill set and goal in mind.

  2. ) Build a syllabus for the student. This includes assignments to allow accountability habits.

  3. ) Critiques and learning how to critique others' artwork. Not only does this help identify what works and what doesn't, but it will also help spot any blunder before the final is submitted, whether it be a physical or digital submission.

  4. ) After the tutoring period is up, and no additional tutoring is needed, a post-tutoring framework will be provided, to ensure consistency and accountability.

Hobby tutoring breakdown:

Similar to professional tutoring, but with flexible courses instead. Assignments and critique learning are optional. Range from "fun" to "side hustle".

Children tutoring breakdown:

Similar to hobby tutoring, without critique lessons. A fun, basic understanding of art. Vary depending on the goal and level of understanding.

Additional/specific tutoring provided:

- Art school portfolio applications

- Baseline illustration business skills (e.g., contracts, copyright, etc.)

- Learn how to turn ideas into practice. Including concept and thesis building.

Recommendations:

"Harlen is one of the best artists I know. He is so knowledgeable about everything art and design. In addition to being a skilled artist he is also patient and willing mentor!"

- Mariam

"Harlen is incredibly passionate about the art industry and what he does as a illustrator and creator. He is knowledgeable, patient and great at explaining how something is designed to someone like myself who is very green in this industry.

Since I am a visual learner, Harlen used the screen sharing function in virtual meetings to help simplify the process and to show me exactly how things are done.

We were working on creating a logo design together and he showed me the importance of the key aspects involved in designing a logo.

I would highly recommend Harlen for his art skills, his patience and eagerness to teach to anyone who is looking to learn!"

- S.T.
